An orphaned solar system is a solar power installation originally fitted by a third-party provider who is no longer reachable or in business, leaving the homeowner or business without any active service contract, accessible warranty, or technical support.

The term emerged during the 2022 to 2024 South African load-shedding boom, when hundreds of new solar installers entered the market and many subsequently closed. If your installer no longer answers the phone, your solar system is probably orphaned.

01Safety Risks & Non-Compliance

  • Missing earthing, RCD protection or anti-islanding safeguards can look fine at first glance but introduce serious electric shock, fire, and back-feed hazards.

How to make a claim

Do I still need to register my solar system with Eskom?

What happens if I choose not to proceed with the repair quotation?
There is no requirement to commit after receiving our report and quote. You retain ownership of all inspection results, photographs, and recommendations. If you re-engage with us within 90 days, your original inspection fee is credited toward future work.
Can I upgrade or expand my system during the rescue process?
Yes, most clients do. Additional panels, battery upgrades, EV chargers, and smart load-management can all be seamlessly incorporated into the rescue scope with unified pricing and a single point of accountability.
What warranty does My Solar Friend provide on rescue work?

Every workmanship component of a My Solar Friend rescue is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee, for as long as you own the system and hold an active support plan with us.

What that covers: the cable connections, terminations, conduit, earthing, mounting and software/parameter setup that we performed. Newly installed components carry their respective manufacturer warranties (typically 5 to 10 years).

What it does not cover: failure of the equipment or switchgear itself, including panels, inverters, batteries, isolators, breakers, fuses and metering, which fall under the relevant manufacturer's warranty. The guarantee also does not cover damage from lightning, surge, flood, theft, vandalism, weather events, or work modified by another contractor after our handover.

Are there any hidden fees?
No. Quoted rates cover labour, travel, and diagnostics. All component-related expenses are presented in writing for your approval before any work commences.
Why does your pricing start "from" rather than being fixed?
Solar systems vary enormously, a 5 kW residential hybrid with one inverter and one battery is a fundamentally different job to a 20 kW three-phase commercial installation with multiple inverters, battery racks and monitoring points. The audit takes longer, the report is more detailed, and the post-rescue monitoring involves more data. A fixed price would either over-charge small residential clients or under-serve larger commercial ones. Our "from" prices give you a starting point; your free site assessment produces the exact written quote for your specific installation, before any work begins.
What if I do not know my solar system's specifications?
A full system inventory is part of our audit. You do not need to supply any documentation beforehand, we catalogue every panel, inverter, battery, charge controller, circuit breaker and cable on your behalf.
How long does a typical solar rescue take?
Most residential rescues are completed within one to three days of project start, depending on parts availability. The full journey from first enquiry to re-commissioning and CoC issuance typically runs two to three weeks.
Do you service all brands of inverter and battery?
We service systems that meet our technical standards, including Sunsynk, Deye, Victron, Sigenergy, Tesla, Fronius, Solis, SMA, Pylontech, Kodak, JA Solar and Canadian Solar. Some discontinued or non-compliant configurations may fall outside our scope, contact us for a specific assessment.

How warranty claims work for orphaned systems

We service and repair systems built around all the major brands listed above, but we are not the manufacturer's warranty issuer for any of them. Equipment, switchgear, panel and battery warranties are issued by the manufacturer (typically 5 to 10 years) and any claim, repair or replacement under those warranties is decided by the manufacturer alone.

Important to knowManufacturers can, and do, deny warranty claims when the original installation does not meet their technical specifications. This is a real risk for orphaned systems, where the installer who did the wiring, mounting, or commissioning may have cut corners. Where this happens, the manufacturer's decision is final.
