Why Solar + EV

Pairing EV home charging with solar is the only sum that works.

The 2026 NERSA tariff decisions and Eskom's new Homeflex time-of-use structure have pushed grid-based EV charging closer to petrol-parity than most people realise. Charging from your own sun short-circuits that maths.

Buying an electric or plug-in hybrid already shields you from fuel price shocks and cuts your transport emissions to near-zero. But if you charge from the grid alone, most of that saving quietly flows back to Eskom over the ten-year life of the vehicle. Pair your EV home charging with a rooftop PV array and a battery, and every kilometre becomes a kilometre you have already paid for, once, in sunlight.

100 km. Three ways to pay for it.

A BYD Atto 3 consumes about 18 kWh per 100 km. Here is what that costs on each charging option, using current 2026 Eskom and petrol prices.

Synergy Energy Solutions has been installing grid-tied and hybrid PV systems across South Africa . We have commissioned over 1,700 solar systems, 17+ MWh of battery storage and 48 MW of peak PV. Adding an EV charger to that stack is what we do next, from Centurion, Cape Town and Polokwane.

Solar-paired EV Charging

How sun-to-car energy flows. Properly integrated.

Solar EV charging only works when the whole stack is designed to talk to itself. Bolting a charger onto an existing house produces a charger, not a system. Here's what a properly integrated South African setup actually does.

1

Solar panels generate excess

A 6 kWp+ rooftop array on a sunny Highveld day produces more than most homes consume midday. Without smart routing, that surplus flows to the grid at a fraction of what you pay to import it back at night.

2

PV array feeds the system

String-tied panels send DC into the inverter. We size and orient the array around your actual driving distance and home load, not generic kWh-per-kWp tables that ignore SA-specific shading and roof angles.

3

Hybrid inverter routes intelligently

This is where the integration lives. A hybrid inverter and EMS decide, minute by minute, whether surplus solar charges your battery, charges your EV, or exports. Without one, your charger is just a glorified plug.

4

Battery buffers the gap

EVs don't always charge when the sun shines. The home battery time-shifts solar to evening charging, keeps essentials running through load-shedding, and lets you charge cheaply on Eskom Homeflex off-peak tariffs.

5

Charger negotiates with the system

Solar-aware EV chargers (Sigen EV AC, Victron EV Station, Tesla Wall Connector with PV) follow the production curve, accept Homeflex schedules, and, on bidirectional Sigen DC units, let your EV act as a backup battery for V2H during outages.

Before You Buy

Single-phase or three-phase? It determines everything.

The single biggest factor in which charger suits your home is the type of electrical supply you already have. Most South African homes don't need to upgrade, but knowing which camp you're in saves weeks of back-and-forth.

Single-phase (about 70% of SA homes)

Standard 60 to 80 amp supply. Caps at 7.4 kW charging, about 30 km of range per hour.

  • Fills a 60 kWh EV overnight
  • Best matched to Tesla Wall Connector (11.5 kW limit is theoretical on single-phase) or a 7 kW Sigen EV AC
  • No supply upgrade needed in most cases
  • Entry price: from approximately R22 000 fully installed

Three-phase (new estates, upper-middle Gauteng)

Typically found in newer developments and sectional title schemes. Unlocks 11 kW or 22 kW, up to 110 km of range per hour.

  • Fills most EVs in 2 to 4 hours
  • Only useful if your EV's onboard charger also accepts the higher rate, check the spec sheet
  • Worth the premium for two-EV households
  • Entry price: from approximately R38 000 fully installed
Quick check: Look at your main DB board. If the main incoming breaker is labelled "60A" or "80A" and there is one live feed, you're single-phase. If there are three incoming breakers labelled "L1 L2 L3" or the bill says "3-phase", you have three-phase. If you are not sure, our electrician confirms it in five minutes during the free site assessment, no commitment required.

Eskom Homeflex + EV charging

Charge when the grid is cheap. Save thousands per year.

Eskom automatically applies the Homeflex time-of-use tariff to direct customers who register rooftop solar. Understood and scheduled properly, it rewards EV drivers. Ignored, it punishes them.

How the time-of-use windows work

Homeflex divides each day into three windows, off-peak, standard, and peak, and charges different per-kWh rates in each, with rates further seasonally adjusted (winter peak is the most expensive). For an EV driver the practical play is simple: schedule charging for the overnight off-peak window, where the rate is the cheapest of the day.

Every smart EV charger we install, Tesla Wall Connector, Sigen EV AC, Victron EV Station, supports scheduled charging via its companion app. On a typical 1 500 km-per-month commuting profile, shifting charging from standard to off-peak saves roughly R1 500 to R3 000 per year. On top of that, any daytime solar surplus routed to the car is effectively free.

Watch out: Homeflex peak rates in winter (June to August, 17:00 to 19:00 and 06:00 to 09:00) are dramatically higher than off-peak, often three to four times more. Running a 22 kW charger into a winter peak window is an expensive mistake. Scheduled charging prevents it.

Cost & installation basics
How much does a home EV charger cost to install in South Africa?
A fully installed Level 2 home EV charger from Synergy Energy Solutions starts from approximately R22 000 for a single-phase 7.4 kW wallbox and from approximately R38 000 for a three-phase 22 kW AC unit such as the Tesla Wall Connector or Sigen EV AC. Bi-directional DC chargers and solar-integrated packages are quoted after a site assessment. Every installation includes a Certificate of Compliance as required by SANS 10142.
How long does a typical Synergy EV charger installation take?
On-site work is typically four to eight hours for a single-phase 7 kW wallbox, and one full day for a three-phase installation. End-to-end, from signed quote to handed-over CoC, installations take 7 to 14 working days in a standalone home. Body corporate or sectional title installations add 2 to 6 weeks for trustee approval.
Is charging from a 3-pin plug safe for daily use?
No, not for daily use. Standard South African household socket outlets are rated for intermittent 10 amp loads, not continuous 10 amp draw for 8 or more hours. Dedicated EV wallboxes handle that load safely and charge three to four times faster. Insurers routinely decline claims for electrical fires traced back to EV charging on domestic sockets. The wallbox is cheaper than the fire risk.
What happens to my home insurance if I skip the Certificate of Compliance?
Your policy can be voided for claims related to electrical issues. Without a valid CoC covering the EV circuit, home insurance policies routinely reject claims for electrical fires or damage, and you cannot transfer ownership of the property, the CoC is a condition of sale. Every Synergy quote includes the CoC as a line item. It is not optional, and we will not skip it.
Solar integration & power supply
Can I charge my EV from my existing solar system?
Yes, most grid-tied and hybrid solar systems can power a Level 2 EV charger, provided the inverter, main distribution board and the charger's circuit can handle the added load. We audit your existing PV system, inverter capacity and DB board before recommending a charger, so you don't end up tripping breakers or overloading a 5 kW hybrid inverter with a 22 kW charger.
Do I have single-phase or three-phase power at home?
Around 70% of South African residential properties run on single-phase 60 to 80 amp supplies, which caps your charger at about 7.4 kW, roughly 30 km of range per hour. Larger estates, newer sectional-title developments and most upper-middle Gauteng suburbs have three-phase, which unlocks 11 kW and 22 kW chargers. Check your DB board or your last municipal bill, or our electrician can confirm in five minutes on a free site visit.
How long does it take to fully charge an EV at home?
On a standard 3-pin plug (Level 1) a full charge takes 12 to 24 hours. A dedicated Level 2 wall charger typically fills an EV in 4 to 8 hours overnight. A three-phase 22 kW unit can top up most South African-market EVs in 2 to 4 hours when the vehicle's onboard charger supports that rate.
Can I still charge my EV during load shedding?
Eskom declared the end of load shedding in February 2026, but localised outages and municipal cuts still happen and the grid remains a known operational risk. A stand-alone charger stops working during any outage. Pair the charger with a PV array and battery (Tesla Powerwall 3 or SigenStor) and charging continues from stored solar energy. A bi-directional DC charger goes further and lets your EV back-feed essential circuits.
Tariffs, regulation & sectional title
How does the Eskom Homeflex time-of-use tariff affect EV charging?
Homeflex is the time-of-use tariff Eskom automatically applies to direct customers who register rooftop solar with export. It charges significantly different rates by time of day, so overnight off-peak charging (roughly 22:00 to 06:00) is several rand per kWh cheaper than daytime peak. Every smart charger we install can schedule charging to the Homeflex off-peak window, which typically saves R1 500 to R3 000 per year over a dumb charger on a commuter's driving profile.
Do I have to register my EV charger with my municipality?
If the EV charger is wired to a grid-tied PV or battery system that can export, you fall under the Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) registration requirements of your municipality, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Polokwane and others, and the NRS 097 code. A dedicated EV charger on its own does not export and does not require SSEG registration, but does require a Certificate of Compliance under SANS 10142. SSEG fees vary by municipality, confirm with your local supplier.
Can I install an EV charger in a sectional title complex or body corporate?
Yes, but it requires approvals. You typically need a trustee resolution under the Sectional Titles Schemes Management Act, confirmation of electrical capacity on the master electrical plan, and a Conduct Rules amendment if the charger is on common property. Expect the approval process to add 2 to 6 weeks to the timeline. We regularly handle body-corporate packages in estates across Gauteng and Western Cape and can prepare the technical motion for your trustees.
How much cheaper is charging an EV at home versus buying petrol?
Roughly 80% cheaper per kilometre at current prices. A BYD Atto 3 (60 kWh battery, about 18 kWh per 100 km) charged on Eskom Homeflex off-peak costs around R26 per 100 km. The same 100 km in a petrol Hyundai Creta 1.5 costs about R134 at R25 per litre. Add solar to the stack and daytime charging approaches zero marginal cost. A R22 000 home-charger installation typically pays back in 10 to 14 months for a 1 500 km-per-month driver.
Your vehicle & charger choice
Do you install Tesla Wall Connectors in South Africa?
Yes. Synergy Energy Solutions is an approved Tesla installer, handling both the Tesla Powerwall 3 home battery and the Tesla Wall Connector EV charger. Every installation is carried out by our trained technicians, signed off by a qualified electrician, and certified with a SANS 10142-1 Certificate of Compliance.
What is bidirectional charging (V2H and V2G)?
Bidirectional charging lets your EV battery feed electricity back to your home (Vehicle-to-Home) or the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid). The Sigenergy SigenStor bi-directional DC charger we install is V2H and V2G capable on supported vehicles, BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin, MG ZS EV, Ford Ranger PHEV and others rolling out through 2026. During an outage, a fully charged EV paired with a bi-directional charger can keep essential household circuits running for several hours.
Which EV charger brands do you install?
Synergy installs Tesla Wall Connector, Sigenergy SigenStor EV AC and bi-directional DC chargers, and the Victron Energy EV Charging Station. We can also install chargers supplied by your vehicle manufacturer (BMW Wallbox, Mercedes-Benz, BYD, GWM Ora, Volvo) and issue a Certificate of Compliance on completion.
Does my EV model affect which charger I should buy?
Yes. Connector type (Type 2 on nearly every EV sold in SA, CCS2 for DC) and maximum onboard charging rate both matter. A 22 kW charger on a Nissan Leaf that peaks at 6.6 kW is wasted money; a 7 kW wallbox on a BYD that accepts 11 kW leaves speed on the table. We verify compatibility and match the charger to the highest AC rate your household's EV fleet can accept before quoting.
