Why this page exists

Most installers don't service what they sell.

If you've owned a heat pump or solar water heating system for more than a year, you've probably hit the wall: the company that installed it doesn't return calls, the manufacturer says "use an accredited agent" without naming one, and a generic plumber doesn't know your unit. We do.

The honest version: most ITS, Alliance Air, Samsung Inverter and Kwikpump heat pumps require an annual service to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid. Skipping it voids the warranty, can significantly shorten the unit's working life, and quietly pushes up your electricity bill as scale builds on the evaporator. Most South African installers don't market servicing as a productised offering, and that's the gap we fill.

We service all brands

ITS, Alliance Air, Samsung Inverter, Kwikot Kwikpump, Geyser Gecko PV controllers, plus most other heat pump brands installed in SA, even if Synergy didn't install yours.

We keep your warranty valid

Digital service records on every unit we visit. If you ever need to claim, we have the proof of compliance ready. Records stay yours, your future installer isn't tied to us.

We tell you the truth

Honest pass/fail report after every service. We quote upfront for any parts before doing the work. We'd rather lose the job than upsell you something you don't need.

Service 2 of 4

PV solar water heating service

For systems where solar PV panels feed a hybrid DC/AC element via a controller (typically Geyser Gecko) into a Kwikot or similar tank. No moving parts, but plenty to check.

What's included in a PV solar water heating service

  • Panel cleaning and shading check
  • DC isolator and wiring inspection
  • Element resistance test (hybrid DC/AC)
  • Geyser Gecko or equivalent controller diagnostics and firmware check
  • Tank pressure relief valve test
  • Sacrificial anode rod inspection (replace if depleted)
  • Tank temperature performance check across a 24-hour cycle
  • Hard-water area: descaling solution flush if scale buildup detected

When PV solar water heating actually needs servicing

PV systems have no pumps, no compressors, no refrigerant, so they're often sold as "maintenance-free." That's mostly true, but three things still wear out: panels accumulate dust and can lose 10 to 20% output if not washed off; elements scale up in hard-water areas (Pretoria East, parts of the West Rand, Polokwane), and anode rods deplete over roughly 5 to 8 years, once they're gone the tank starts corroding from the inside and can eventually fail. A quick anode check at around year 5 can prevent a costly burst-tank flood.

Service 3 of 4

Pool heat pump service & repairs

Salt-chlorinated and conventional chlorine pool heat pumps. The right time for a service is just before swim season starts, but we service year-round.

What's included in a pool heat pump service

  • Evaporator coil clean (the #1 cause of poor pool heat pump performance)
  • Refrigerant pressure check and top-up, titanium heat-exchanger compatible refrigerants
  • Fan motor and compressor inspection
  • Bypass and water flow inspection
  • Controller calibration and timer settings review
  • Salt-chlorination compatibility check (titanium heat exchanger condition)
  • COP performance test, your unit should still be hitting close to its rated efficiency
  • Cover advice: a pool cover can roughly halve your running costs and we'll tell you so

Heating your pool seems to be costing more than last year?

That's almost always a dirty evaporator or low refrigerant, both fixed in a single visit. Book a service and we'll diagnose properly.

Book pool service

Best time to book

Book in August or early September for pre-season servicing, your heat pump will be ready for spring use, and our diary fills up fast once the weather turns. We service mid-season too, but a pool that's struggling to hit setpoint in November is usually a problem that started in winter and went unnoticed.

Service 4 of 4

Hydronic underfloor heating service

Wet underfloor heating systems, the kind with a heat pump or boiler driving warm water through pipes embedded in the screed. Different beast from electric underfloor; different service requirements. If you're looking to install a new system rather than service one, see our hydronic underfloor heating page.

What's included in a hydronic underfloor heating service

  • System pressure check (cold + warm)
  • Manifold inspection: flow rates per zone, balancing, leak check
  • Pump and actuator diagnostics across all zones
  • Thermostat calibration (smart and basic controls)
  • Heat source inspection, heat pump, boiler or solar thermal source
  • Inhibitor concentration test and top-up if depleted
  • Pressure flush if scale or magnetite buildup is detected (typically 5+ year systems)
  • Pre-winter run-up test to confirm even heating across all zones

The cold-spots problem

If parts of your floor are warm and others stay cold, that's almost always either air trapped in a zone loop, a stuck actuator, or magnetite buildup blocking flow in the affected pipework. None of these mean the system is "broken", they're standard service interventions. A pressure-flush plus inhibitor top-up resolves most cold-spot issues that have built up over 5 to 10 years.

For systems beyond economic repair (cracked screed, multiple pipe failures), we'll tell you so honestly, and we can quote on alternatives like carbon fibre wall heating as a less invasive replacement option.

For hotels, lodges, schools, retirement villages

Commercial water heating maintenance contracts

Predictable annual fees, scheduled service visits, priority breakdown response and written performance reports for your facilities team. Available across all three Synergy regions.

Why commercial sites need contracts, not call-outs

A 60-room hotel running 5,000 to 15,000 litres of hot water a day cannot afford to discover a heat pump fault on a Friday night. Commercial maintenance contracts move you from reactive (call when something breaks) to scheduled (problems caught at quarterly visits before guests notice).

Most of our commercial clients find the contract pays for itself, through a combination of caught-early repairs, energy efficiency restored by descaling, and the avoidance of emergency call-outs that would each have cost more than the contract itself.

2 to 4×

Scheduled visits per year

Sized to your hot-water volume and system complexity. Hotels typically quarterly; smaller guesthouses 2× per year.

Priority

Front-of-queue breakdown response

Contracted commercial sites are scheduled ahead of ad-hoc call-outs. Faster arrangements available for mission-critical sites with parts held on site.

Local

Parts held in-region

Common spares for ITS, Alliance and Samsung kept locally so we're not waiting on shipments when you need a fix.

How it works

From booking to back-to-normal, usually in one visit.

No phone tag, no surprise invoices. Here's exactly what happens when you book a service with us.

  1. Book online or call

Use the form below or phone 010 601 6464. Tell us the system type (heat pump, PV, pool, underfloor), the brand if you know it, and what's prompting the booking, annual service, fault, missed services, or warranty admin.

  2. We confirm your slot

Urgent faults (no hot water, system tripping, leaks) are scheduled ahead of routine servicing. We tell you the realistic slot upfront, not the optimistic one, and we keep you posted if anything changes.

  3. On-site service: 60 to 90 minutes typical

Our technician arrives within a tight arrival window we agree with you, not a vague all-day slot. They run the full service checklist, take photos, and tell you what they found.

  4. Honest pass/fail report, quoted upfront for any extras

If the unit's fine, you get the all-clear and digital service records. If something needs fixing, you get a written quote on the spot, and the work goes ahead only when you approve. No "while we're here" upsells.

  5. Records go on file. Reminder before your next service.

Every service is recorded against your unit's serial number. We send a reminder ahead of when next year's service is due, so warranty compliance never lapses by accident.

The team that comes to your door

Trained on the brands. Honest about what they find.

Every Synergy service is carried out by a technician with manufacturer-specific training on the unit they're working on, not a sub-contractor, not whoever the call-centre dispatched.

Heat pump & refrigeration

Senior service technician

Honest note: The team grows and contracts seasonally, pool work peaks August through October, heat pump catch-up services peak in winter. The four roles above are the permanent service team based in Centurion; Cape Town and Polokwane have their own dedicated technicians who handle regional call-outs. If a job needs a brand or system specialism we don't have in-house on the day, we'll tell you upfront and either schedule the right person or recommend a specialist we trust. We don't put untrained hands on your unit to fill a slot.

Outside these areas? Get in touch anyway. We sometimes service outlying regions on planned-route trips, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's economic or whether you'd be better served by a local technician we trust.

We service what we sell, and what others won't.

In a market where most installers vanish after commissioning and most manufacturers can't name an "accredited service agent" near you, we built our service operation deliberately. The same team that installs is the team that maintains.

16 years on the tools

Synergy has installed and maintained renewable energy systems since 2010, ECA member, PV GreenCard accredited and SAPVIA-aligned. Same team, same standards, same phone number.

No commission-based bias

Our technicians are paid to service properly, not to sell add-ons. If your unit doesn't need a refrigerant top-up, we don't add one.

4.7★ over 73 Google reviews

Customer feedback explicitly mentions our after-sales follow-up, including phone calls on weekends to check everything's OK. That's the standard.

One quote, no surprises

Every repair is quoted upfront before work starts. If we find something extra mid-service, we stop and call you before doing anything that adds to the bill.

Records stay yours

Digital service records on every visit, accessible to you and any future installer you choose. We don't lock you in by hoarding your unit's history.

Service FAQs

Honest answers to service questions.

Twelve of the questions we hear most often. If yours isn't here, ask in the form below, we'll answer in plain English.

Frequency & cost

How often should I service my heat pump water heater?
Once a year for residential heat pumps, every brand (ITS, Alliance Air, Samsung Inverter, Kwikot Kwikpump) recommends annual servicing, and most manufacturer warranties require it. Commercial sites running heavier daily volumes typically need servicing every 6 months. A service includes a system clean, evaporator de-scale, refrigerant pressure check, controller diagnostics and a written performance report.
How much does a heat pump service cost in South Africa?
A standalone annual heat pump service starts at R 1 250 in Gauteng and the Western Cape (call-out included within service area; outlying areas may carry a small travel fee). A catch-up or major service for systems that have missed 2+ years starts at R 1 850. These are the starting prices, if we find a mechanical issue that needs additional parts or labour, we'll stop, quote it, and only proceed once you approve. Refrigerant top-ups, compressor and fan motor replacements are always quoted separately. Compared to a typical industry call-out fee of R 500 to R 950 plus diagnostic and parts on top, our flat starting price is honest and predictable.
Do PV solar water heating systems need servicing?
Yes, though less often than heat pumps. PV solar water heating systems (panels feeding a hybrid DC element via a Geyser Gecko or similar controller) should be checked every 12 to 24 months. The check covers panel cleaning, DC isolator and wiring inspection, element resistance test, controller diagnostics, geyser pressure relief valve and anode rod inspection, and a temperature performance check. There are no moving parts, but elements scale up in hard-water areas, anodes wear out, and panels lose 10 to 20% output if dust isn't washed off.

Brands & coverage

Do you service heat pumps that Synergy didn't install?
Yes. We service ITS, Alliance Air, Samsung Inverter, Kwikot Kwikpump and most other heat pump brands installed in South Africa, regardless of who installed them originally. Our technicians carry parts and refrigerant for the major brands. If you've inherited a heat pump from a previous home owner, or your original installer is no longer trading, we can pick up the servicing without you having to start over.
What brands of heat pump do you service?
We service ITS heat pumps (residential and commercial), Alliance Air heat pumps, Samsung Inverter heat pumps, Kwikot Kwikpump, plus most other brands installed in South Africa including Heat Tech, Thermowise and AquaHeat. For PV solar water heating we service Geyser Gecko and equivalent DC element controllers. For pool heat pumps we service all major SA-distributed brands.
What if my original installer is out of business?
Pick up the phone and call us. We've taken over servicing for many homes and businesses where the original installer has shut down or stopped responding to service requests. As long as the unit is identifiable (most heat pumps and controllers carry serial number plates) we can usually source parts, restart manufacturer warranty compliance where possible, and put the system on a regular service rhythm. Our records become your records, your future installer isn't tied to us either.

What's included

What does an annual heat pump service include?
A full annual heat pump service covers: visual inspection of the unit and pipework, fan and compressor running checks, evaporator de-scale, refrigerant pressure measurement and top-up if required, electrical connection check, controller and timer diagnostics, condensate drain inspection, and a written performance report with photos. Typical time on site is 60 to 90 minutes for a residential unit. We give you a clear pass/fail report and quote upfront for any parts or repairs needed before doing the work.
Can hydronic underfloor heating systems be serviced?
Yes, and they should be. Hydronic underfloor systems should be serviced annually before each heating season. The service includes a pressure-flush of the pipework to remove scale and corrosion, manifold check, inhibitor top-up, pump and actuator diagnostics, thermostat calibration and a heat-source check (heat pump or boiler). Skipping this for 5+ years is the most common cause of cold spots and reduced efficiency in older hydronic systems, and the damage is recoverable in most cases.
Do you service pool heat pumps in winter?
Yes. Pool heat pumps are best serviced just before swim season starts (August to September) so they're ready for spring use, but we service year-round. Most pool heat pump issues we're called out for are caused by dirty evaporators, low refrigerant from slow leaks, or controller problems, all addressable in a single visit. We carry titanium heat-exchanger compatible refrigerants for both salt-chlorinated and conventional chlorine pool installations.

Warranty & response

Will my warranty be voided if I miss an annual service?
Often, yes. ITS heat pumps explicitly require annual servicing by an accredited service agent for the warranty to remain valid, and most other heat pump brands have similar clauses. We keep digital service records on every unit we visit, so if you ever need to claim, we have the proof of compliance ready. If you've missed a service or two, the unit can usually be brought back into compliance with one catch-up visit, call us and we'll tell you honestly whether your warranty is still claimable.
How quickly can you respond to a heat pump that's not working?
Urgent faults (no hot water, system tripping, leaks) are scheduled ahead of routine annual servicing, and commercial sites on a maintenance contract get front-of-queue priority. We're honest about the realistic slot when you book rather than over-promising, and we don't pretend to be a 24/7 emergency service. For mission-critical commercial sites we can hold common spares on site so a fix isn't waiting on a shipment.
Do you offer commercial maintenance contracts?
Yes. Commercial maintenance contracts are available for hotels, lodges, guesthouses, schools, retirement villages and any property running large-volume hot water. Contracts cover scheduled servicing visits (typically 2 to 4 per year depending on system size), priority breakdown response, written performance reports for your facilities team, and a fixed annual fee that's predictable for budgeting. Available in Gauteng, Western Cape and Limpopo.
